• W2034941917 abstract "Electron microscopical studies of developing ovarian oocytes from a variety of anuran amphibians have demonstrated the occurrence of a morphologically distinct subclass in the yolk platelet population, designated as “nascent yolk platelets,” within the peripheral cytoplasm of all vitellogenic oocytes. The presence of a crystalline main body with characteristic 85 A major periodicities serves to identify these formed elements as yolk platelets; however, nascent yolk platelets can be distinguished from the other yolk platelets by the small size of their central crystal, the incomplete envelopment of this crystal by the superficial granular layer, the presence of regions of ruffled contour in the limiting membrane, and by the inclusion of a variety of heterogeneous materials within the organelle. Such additional materials, which are not found within the larger yolk platelets, range from condensed or reticular patches of amorphous substances to small nonmembrane-bound spherical bodies of several types. The peripheral ooplasm contains some single-membrane bound vesicles whose contents appear to be similar to some of the organellar inclusions. Nascent yolk platelets are the only form of these proteid yolk organelles that were observed to be present in oocytes which have just begun vitellogenesis, thus supporting the conclusion that they represent the initial “platelet” stage during the organellar morphogenesis of yolk platelets." @default.
