- W2034952503 abstract "Environmental characteristics are hypothesised to influence active transport (AT), and perceptions of theoretically important characteristics have demonstrated associations with AT previously. Though little research has combined child and adult perceptions of the home and school neighbourhood to determine their relative influence on children's AT to-from school. Participants were 219 children who provided information on their perceptions of the home and school neighbourhood examining characteristics such as infrastructure, traffic and safety. Children's parents provided perceptions of the home neighbourhood using the Neighbourhood Environment Walkability Scale (NEWS), and frequency of AT to-from school in a typical week. Logistic regression was used to determine the relative contribution of children's perceptions above and beyond the influence of adults’ perceptions of the neighbourhood. Parents’ perceptions of infrastructure absence in the neighbourhood were negatively associated with performing AT in bivariate associations (OR = 0.40; 95% CI, 0.22–0.71), and adjusted models (OR = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.12–0.99). This association disappeared when models included child's perceptions. Children's perception that streets were not safe to walk/cycle on were associated with AT in both crude (OR = 0.56; 95% CI, 0.23–0.92), and adjusted models (OR = 0.20; 95% CI, 0.07–0.75). Perceptions that heavy traffic is not present in the home neighbourhood was associated with AT (OR = 0.23; 95% CI, 0.07–0.75), and that footpaths were absent in the school neighbourhood were positively associated with AT (OR = 4.42; 95% CI, 1.11–17.63). Subsequent examination of GIS derived data on infrastructure presence, street connectivity and busy streets appears to in part explain these counterintuitive results." @default.
