- W2034974530 abstract "This paper presents a numerical method for predicting the failure loads of slender reinforced concrete columns bending about the minor axis. The method has a simple algorithm for computer programming, and takes both the geometric and material non-linearities into account. The failure loads predicted by the proposed method are compared with the values predicted by BS 8110 (1985) and EC 2 (1992) for 127 columns in eleven experimental investigations carried out in the past. These columns have a length to depth ratio of 8.8 to 60, a load eccentricity to depth ratio of 0.033 to 1.0, a concrete cube strength of 18.4-50 N/mm squared, a main reinforcement yield strength of 272-520.4 N/mm squared and a reinforcement percentage of 0.64-3.35%. The codes of practice are found to be more conservative for higher length to depth ratios and lower eccentricity to depth ratios while the proposed method is equally accurate for all the length to depth ratios and all the eccentricity to depth ratios.
