- W2035133605 abstract "Microbicides are urgently needed to curb the escalating number of HIV infections among young women. Numerous products are in preclinical and clinical development, with four products in the advanced stages of human trials. In early 2007, there were four products being tested in five clinical trials; cellulose sulfate (CS), Carraguard ® , BufferGel ® and PRO 2000 (0.5% and 2%). All products except BufferGel belong to a class of compounds called entry fusion inhibitors. BufferGel belongs to the class of acid buffers. Results of the Carraguard trial are expected in late 2007, whereas the CS trial was prematurely halted due to safety concerns. New and novel classes of antiretroviral agents are being considered as microbicides, including tenofovir and TMC 120. Current challenges in implementing microbicide trials include issues around ethics and standards of care, measuring adherence to product use, coital dependency of products, lower than expected HIV incidence and lack of surrogate markers for effectiveness." @default.
