The glass transition temperature, Tg, was found to be between 295 and 350 K depending on the structure of the polymer and the type of counterion. The dielectric properties were studied in the frequency range 10–107 Hz and in the temperature range − 170 < T < 80°C. The glassy polymers exhibit a dielectric relaxation at low temperatures assigned to a coupling of the motions of the methylene groups to the ionic centres in the polymer chain. The dielectric behaviour at high temperature is dominated by contributions of the ionic conductivity. At temperatures above a critical temperature Tcrit (Tcrit is 40–100 K below Tg) the conductivity increases strongly with increasing temperature and its frequency dependence becomes negligible. The temperature dependence of the conductivity follows an Arrhenius law with 1 < Ea < 1.5 eV. The onset of this temperature-activated conduction process at Tcrit coincides with the mechanical β-relaxation, the structural origin of which is still unclear. Extrapolation of the data yields values for the d.c. conductivity which are respectably high. Thus poly[(dimethylimino)decamethylene] tetrafluoroborate reaches a d.c. conductivity of 2 × 10−5 S cm−1 at 57.6°C." @default.
