- W2035598499 abstract "A resurgence of pertussis, especially among adolescents and young adults, has occurred during the past 15 years. A likely explanation is that a pool of older individuals with short-lived immunity from immunization has replaced those with more durable natural immunity. This pool is an important source for pertussis in unimmunized infants. The frequency of pertussis is much higher than ordinarily recognized because mild, atypical, or even subclinical forms go unnoticed—particularly infection in adults. The polymerase chain reaction recently has been used in a technique that is much more sensitive than is culture for the detection of Bordetella pertussis but retains specificity. Three acellular pertussis vaccines, combined with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, have been licensed for infants and young children because they are efficacious and are less reactogenic than are whole-cell vaccines. Immunization goals include drastically reducing the incidence of pertussis, especially in the Third World, where mortality is still high." @default.
