- W2035676652 abstract "Planar helium bubble arrays in Ni are observed by TEM after 80 eV He+ -implantation. Observations by other authors on Mo suggest that in the first stage of their growth these planar bubble arrays have in fact a platelet morphology. To explain this two-dimensional growth mode, we performed atomistic computer simulations. The results of these calculations show that a helium filled aggregate tends to expel neighbouring atoms at its outer edges. The atoms are displaced in the direction of a nearest octahedral position. The results point to the formation of an interstitial loop. The observed transformation of helium filled platelets into groups of smaller aggregates is studied by means of total energy considerations. It is established that, once a critical radius is attained, the platelet is unstable against transformation. An explanation is also given for the fact that two-dimensional aggregates are observed to be more stable in bcc than in fcc structures." @default.
