- W2035713034 abstract "When chick embryo cells were X-rayed in vitro prior to infection with low multiplicities of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV), most of the cells lost the capacity to register as infective centers. Even after exposure to large doses of X-rays, however, a small fraction of the cells retained the ability to register as infective centers. When heavily X-rays cells were infected with high multiplicities of virus, practically all of them retained the capacity to register as infective centers. Proflavine, which has no effect on free RSV, but inhibits virus growth in unirradiated cells, readily inhibited the production of virus in X-rayed cells. The ability of X-rayed cells to initiate characteristic foci of Rous sarcoma cells remained sensitive to proflavine inhibition for a longer period of time after infection than did focus formation by the unirradiated cells, suggesting that one effect of irradiation was to delay virus development. Studies were carried out on the effect of ultraviolet light on free RSV. The great resistance of RSV to inactivation by ultraviolet light was not modified by drying the virus before irradiation. The survivors of an irradiated RSV suspension multiplied at the same rate as did unirradiated virus. Thus, if there was any sublethal damage among the survivors it did not delay the growth of the virus for more than a few hours if at all." @default.
