- W2035814584 abstract "Objective. To study afferent projections to the pharynx and soft palate motorneurones in the cat, and their roles in different functions of these muscles, such as vocalization, respiration, swallowing, food ingestion and vomiting. Materials and methods. In 168 cases [3H]-leucine injections were made in the central nervous system. The dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus (dgNA) contains motoneurones innervating the pharynx and soft palate. In all cases, labelled fibres to this cell group were studied. Results. Six areas seem to have afferent projections to the dgNA: the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA), the lateral tegmental field of the caudal medulla, the first cervical segment, the tegmentum dorsomedial to the superior olivary complex, the solitary nucleus and the caudal raphe nuclei with adjacent areas. Projections from ventrolateral parabrachial nuclei and ventrolateral periaqueductal grey also seem to be present. Conclusion. Further research is necessary to demonstrate possible projections from ventrolateral parabrachial nuclei and ventrolateral periaqueductal grey. There are only a limited number of regions in the central nervous system that have direct control of pharynx and soft palate musculature. The control by the NRA seems to be the most important. It is likely that this cellgroup plays a crucial role in vocalization in general, even including human speech." @default.
