- W203611497 abstract "This chapter describes a five O’clock gathering at Devonshire Terrace, Christmas 1843, following the success of the Dickens' salutary story A Christmas Carol . It showed how goodwill, kindness, and simplicity may be used for the salvation of greed and selfishness. It further enlarged even further Dickens' reputation as a humanitarian. It was published a few days before Christmas 1843 and was an instant success. Six thousand copies were sold in one day and by early 1844, three editions were already taken by the trade. The tenderness he showed in the Carol permeated his own home life and was recorded many times by his children in their reminiscences of their father. The “Yes and No” game had also caught on Dickens' household. It is described in full in A Christmas Carol . The evening included charades that were rehearsed that very morning. Many country dances of home-made invention were strenuously performed. The finale was usually the Sir Roger de Coverley, danced very much in the same manner as at old Fezziwig's Ball in the Carol. The menu for the party included Christmas cake; Christmas mince pies; assorted sandwiches; and Charles Dickens' punch." @default.
