- W2036172063 abstract "With their solid physical, social and economic presences, and their strong aura of institutional identity, individual medieval religious houses tend to be treated by historians as distinctly autonomous bodies. That they had (or were meant to have) patrons, enjoying ill-defined rights over the houses and responsibilities to them, is acknowledged from time to time, but is rarely considered to be a significant issue in the historiography. Patrons are certainly recognised to be important in the early stages of a house's existence; but, once it is up and running, and especially when running after several centuries, the patrons recede into invisibility. This volume (which despite its title deals with both male and female communities) firmly shows that, while they may be overlooked, the patrons cannot be ignored, and that they continued to play an influential role in their relations with at least some houses. Karen Stöber's book accordingly offers a valuable contribution to attempts to understand the role of religious houses in English society between c.1300 and the Dissolutions, a period when the monastic ideal itself superficially appears to have been of declining relevance in England's changing spiritual and social circumstances. The brief introduction identifies the issue, and considers the preceding historiography—such as it is—on English monastic patrons. Chapter One then offers a general consideration of the significance of patronage, tracing the overall developments of the late medieval period with the increasing concentration of patronage both in the hands of the Crown (so reducing the number of houses in non-royal lay patronage) and in the hands of fewer families (so reducing the number of patrons, but also increasing the problem of their sense of identification with and commitment to their houses and their need to be selective when exerting their patronage)." @default.
