- W2036203250 abstract "This study addresses the problem of the effects of time stress on the foraging performance of birds. Oystercatchers were kept under semi-natural conditions in a large outdoor aviary with an adjustable, tidal regime and a natural one-prey situation. The birds were put under stress by varying the durations of the low-water period. The birds could forage only during low water and when these periods were shortened to as little as one-third of the natural 5 or 6 h of low water, the birds were able to maintain their mean consumption per tide. To achieve this, they spent proportionally more time foraging during shorter low tides, shortened their searching time per prey item taken and decreased the time spent handling prey, especially the time spent on prey that was rejected and left unopened. As a result, intake rate during foraging increased when the duration of the low tide was shortened. Most individuals had peaks in their consumption rates at the beginning and end of the low-water period, rather than having decelerating satiation curves. In tests with tides of unpredictable durations, the birds showed large variations in their tidal consumption. The consumption at a given tide was then correlated with the consumption deficit built up during the foregoing tides. This strategy ensured that mean consumption over a longer period of such unpredictable tides was the same as during a period of regular predictable tides." @default.
