- W2036345485 abstract "In a recent issue of Liver Transplantation, Walter et al.1 rightly pointed out that the Haycock equation2 for body surface estimation, as employed by Urata et al.,3 was erroneous. In that article, the Haycock equation was used to determine the body surface area (BSA) of subjects with a body weight (BW) lower than 15 kg; the DuBois equation4 was used for those with a BW of 15 kg or more. For the former group, BSA was underestimated because BSA = BW0.378 × BH0.3964 × 0.024265 (where BH is the body height) was used instead of BSA = BW0.5378 × BH0.3964 × 0.024265.2 Subsequent work on validating this formula, nevertheless, did not note whether this was a typographic error or a systemic one.5 Because the BSA for the given BW derived for children under 15 kg from the correct Haycock equation2 is larger than that used to derive the Urata formula,3 the standard liver volume can only be overestimated (instead of underestimated by approximately 30% as noted by Walter et al.1). This can be readily appreciated from Fig. 1, which demonstrates that a regression line derived from the Urata formula is less steep than the others.6-9 Relationship between estimated standard liver weight and body weight.
