- W2036633652 abstract "The basic factors affecting the corrosion resistance of thin and hard physically vapour-deposited coatings are reviewed. It is shown that the coatings themselves, such as TiN, are very corrosion resistant. Existing defects in the coatings, such as pinholes, may however lead to a rapid corrosion of aless noble substrate. Methods used to reduce the risk of corrosion include controlling the deposition parameters, various passivation treatments, deposition of multilayer coatings and alloying the coating/substrate interface. Despite the occasional corrosion problems, the coatings may also improve the corrosion resistance of certain substrates. TiN-coated austenitic stainless steel, for example, shows better corrosion resistance than the substrate. Despite the high hardness of the coatings, useful components can be formed from coated sheet, with no apparent loss of adhesion of the coating." @default.
