- W2036702816 abstract "A study of the principal variations in form and amplitude of the impulses recorded at the level of external receptors of insects was undertaken to determine their physiological significance. The two phases of the spike were analysed under conditions of natural stimulation, of electrical stimultaion, and of combined stimulations. The first positive component increased with the receptor potential and this was attributed principally to a diminution of the dendritic membrane resistance. It reached a maximal amplitude when this membrane resistance being reduced to a minimum, the initial site was artificially repolarized by electrical current. The amplitude of the second negative phase was first studied on an olfactory receptor which normally shows one. It was subsequently induced for mechano-receptors which do not naturally show one, and its amplitude was studied under different conditions of polarization. It is a function of the polarization of the dendritic membrane. The problem of the eventual antidromic conduction of the spike is discussed. As the two components are affected differently by polarizing currents and other factors, it seems possible to use the relative size and shape of these components as criteria in the study of the physiology of the initiation site and of the dendrite." @default.
