- W2036789847 abstract "The aerial surveys reported here were carried out by the Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) in Nitra, starting in 1987. As the survey progressed particular types of sites were targeted and this report covers two examples: circular enclosures and Roman temporary camps. Combining the results of aerial survey with field-walking, geophysical survey and small-scale excavation has allowed us to present the results here with greater confidence. During verification of the circular enclosures we made more extensive use of geophysical methods; with Roman camps, though, the trenching method prevailed. In case of camps, particularly those located on the Danube banks, the results of geophysics were mostly negative because of the character of the ditches' fillings (lower value of magnetic susceptibility than the arable land). A total of five circular enclosures were verified with geophysical survey in Ružindol (excavations also proved geophysical measurements), Horné Otrokovce and Bajtava from neolithic, Vel'ký Cetín and Lel'a from Bronze Age. Small-scale excavations verified 10 Roman temporary camps: Iža 5, Radvań nad Dunajom 2, Muźla 2 and Suchohrad 1. They are situated, in the majority of cases, on the left (northern) Danube bank, and are most likely to have been used in the Marcomani war period during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (ad 170–180)." @default.
