- W2037071154 abstract "This paper deals with the pharmacology of the outflow ehunnels in animals and man. A brief review of the anatomic and flow characteristics of the outflow system and the results of comparative studies of the outflow resistanee in living and dead eyes are presented. These studies indicate that the total outflow resistance in live eyes is higher than in dead eyes and reveal that the vascular eomponent significantly exceeds the mechanical component of the outflow resistance. In the living rabbit, primate, and human, the outflow system has been found to respond to both α and β adrenergic agonists, which may be differentiated using the appropriate α and β receptor antagonists. More detailed analysis of the responses to these agonists has shown that both act on the outflow system to cause biphasie changes in IOP. These apparently paradoxical findings are explained in terms of the vasoconstrictor and vasodilator aetivities of the α and β agonists acting on spatially differentiable loci in the outflow channels. The ability of cyclic AMP to induce direct effects on the trabeeular meshwork resistance is reviewed. The role of the parasympathomimeties and cholinergic-type drugs on the mechanical and vaseular components of the outflow resistanee remains unclear." @default.
