- W203711883 abstract "Boraflex degradation events have been reported at Palisades, Fort Calhoun, and South Texas. Analysis of these events and research by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) indicates that degradation is related to radiation dose and water ingress. Utilities with Boraflex are now trying to determine strategies to deal with the issue. From a safety standpoint, the issue is less significant for pressurized water reactors because large amounts of soluble boron are present in the pool. While little can be done to change water ingress, utilities can manage the radiation dose to the Boraflex through Boraflex {open_quotes}rack management.{close_quotes} In practice, this amounts to optimizing Boraflex cell usage to extend the useful life of the spent-fuel pool rack. Effective Boraflex cell optimization typically involves analysis of spent-fuel pool design, historical usage data, and radiation dose assessment.
