Aber zu welchem Zweck werden diese vielfältigen und oft eigenartigen Verbindungen produziert? Wir sind der Meinung, daß einige von ihnen an der Aufnahme und dem Transport der in wäßrigem Milieu vorhandenen Metall-Ionen beteiligt sein könnten. Während man von vielen durch Landlebewesen produzierten Metaboliten weiß, daß sie als Ionophore dienen können, ist über ein ähnliches Verhalten ihrer marinen Analoga weit weniger bekannt. Ungeachtet der relativen Häufigkeit bestimmter Metall-Ionen in den Ozeanen und von Metabolitstrukturen, die eine Chelatbildung mit Metall-Ionen erleichtern sollten, wurden nur wenige Versuche gemacht, eine Verbindung zwischen diesen beiden Phänomenen herzustellen. Wir haben aus der umfangreichen Literatur über die von Meereslebewesen produzierten Naturstoffe die ausgewählt, die für unsere Prämisse wesentliche Beobachtungen und Vermutungen enthält, und werten diese im folgenden aus. Lediglich eine Handvoll metallhaltiger Komplexe wurde tatsächlich isoliert; außerdem sind Versuche selten, solche Komplexe in vitro herzustellen, und spektroskopische Hinweise auf Metall-Metabolit-Wechselwirkungen sind weder in vivo noch in vitro häufig. Nur bei den vanadiumhaltigen Tunichromen beginnt sich eine plausible (aber keineswegs vollständige) Vorstellung zu entwickeln. In mehreren anderen Fällen wird die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Metallkomplexierung - obwohl von den Autoren diskutiert - durch experimentelle Hinweise nicht gestützt. Die Bemühungen, Informationen über die Struktur und insbesondere die Konformation der Metaboliten durch Röntgenkristallographie, NMR-Spektroskopie und Molekülmechanikrechnungen zu erhalten, scheinen jedoch den Schlüssel für einen rationalen Zugang zu diesem vernachlässigten Thema zu liefern. Ausgehend von neueren Studien über strukturelle Aspekte von marinen Metaboliten stellen wir eine Auswahl der Verbindungen vor, deren Potential zur Bindung von Metall-Ionen weitere Untersuchungen verdient und von denen einige Ziel unserer Synthesebemühungen sind." @default.
