- W2037228940 abstract "Sonia Landy Sheridan founded Generative Systems in 1970 after “discovering” the photocopying machine as an imaging device in the late 1960s. Her innovative workshops encouraged students to work alongside technology in order to express its impact and importance for their contemporary society. Her work recognized, perhaps for the first time, a fully realizable partnership between art and industry, between imaging and science. Also, and perhaps most significantly, her experiments and subsequent “pictures” utilizing the photocopier and other time-based machines depicted “real-time”—immediate and continual motion—a notion much investigated in recent years with the furor surrounding the Internet. In addition to her incredible foresight and originality, Sonia Landy Sheridan's work continued art history's preoccupation with the “aura” of the artist and the question of authenticity versus the mechanical copy. This article is the first half of a Master's dissertation and is a mere introduction to the extensive work of Sonia Landy Sheridan." @default.
