- W2037439428 abstract "The infection process of Washingtonia filifera palms by the pink bud rot fungus Pencillium vermoesenii is described. In experimental infections conidia of the fungus were able to cause disease only when the cuticle of petioles was mechanically injured. This strongly suggests that the fungus behaves as a wound pathogen, thus confirming wounding as the main way for infection of palms in natural conditions. In wounds inoculated with P. vermoesenii, gums were found within 15 d after infection. Scanning electron microscopy revealed mucilage of fibrillar structure when the fungus colonized the parenchyma mainly extracellularly. Vessels (mainly tracheae of the xylem) were clogged but very few hyphae could be found within them." @default.
