- W2037610061 abstract "Geoffrey Dunn has now published a comprehensive study of Adu. Iudaeos, to which he has devoted and published much research before. He seems to have mastered a great deal of literature and information, not only about Tertullian, but about the principles and practice of ancient rhetoric as the early church received it and used it. Noting that Robert D. Sider had examined the works of Tertullian, and identified the signs of rhetorical training and practice in most of them, he has tried to do the same in Adu. Iudaeos, a work which is listed among the dubia of Tertullian: many scholars judge either the whole or the second half not authentic. The later chapters have a different character from the earlier, and a puzzling relation to various similar passages in Adu. Marcionem. Since the rhetorical test has not been applied before, Dunn reckons that it can resolve the vexed question of authorship. He concludes that the whole is a form of controuersia, a class of speech usually associated with the rhetoric of entertainment, often on a fictitious theme. Detailed examination shows that it follows a proper form of presentation as laid down in the school books, exordium, partitio, refutatio, and confirmatio. This scheme is fully set out at the end of the structural argument on pp. 86–7. In all this Dunn is aided by the variability and flexibility with which the rhetorical rules were anciently applied; but the analysis certainly accounts for a number of those repetitions which contribute to the unease of scholars about authorship. He has to allow that much of chapters 9–14 is in an inchoate state, awaiting final revision. In the end, only the final paragraph (14.11–14) of peroratio is judged not authentic." @default.
