- W203764047 abstract "Publisher Summary Annual plants complete their growth and reproduction within a year. Growing season is usually limited climatically with the advent of harsh season: cold winter for summer annuals and dry summer for winter annuals. Plants have a mechanism to foresee the advent of harsh season, and reproduce responding to changes in temperature and photoperiod. Thus, many summer annuals are short-day plants that flower when day length becomes less than a certain threshold maximum, and most winter annuals are long-day plants that flower when day length becomes more than a threshold minimum. The first part of this chapter introduces a simple model of reproductive output to describe the effect of different environments on reproductive yield. The chapter studies plant growth and reproduction as influenced by nutrients, time of germination, and of flowering. Second, it discusses the cost of reproduction with special emphasis on the use of nitrogen in growth and reproduction. It is widely accepted that there are costs in reproduction. However, annuals use all available resources for reproduction, causing death of the whole vegetative body by the end of the growth period to leave mature capsules (fruits). This implies that annuals reproduce at all costs. Finally, the chapter discusses the importance of nitrogen allocation to reproductive structures as a determinant of reproductive output." @default.
