Some of the methods are discussed by which spectral line intensities can be related to the temperature and density structure and the elemental abundances of the source through the processes of electron impact excitation and ionization, and radiative and dielectronic recombination. For plasmas in a transient state, non-ionization-equilibrium effects and deviations from temperature relaxation may be taken into account. Various applications to sources such as stellar coronae, supernova remnants, hot component of the interstellar medium and intracluster gas are discussed." @default.
