In the total population there was a slight but not significant tendency for parents to over-estimate intelligence, but considerable distortion occurred in the 60 to 80 iq range. Significant differences were found between actual iq and parents' estimated iqs for (a) girls but not boys, (b) children in special schools but not those in normal schools, and (c) children with the ‘cocktail party’ syndrome. No significant differences were found between social classes, for severity of handicap or for single children. It is suggested that knowledge of the parent's estimate of the child's iq can be valuable in a counselling situation. RÉSUMÉ Les scores totaux au Wechsler de 57 des 58 survivants d'un groupe d'enfants atteints de spina bifida ont été comparés avec l'estimation parentale d'un âge mental converti en chiffre de qi. Dans la population totale, il y a une légère mais non significative tendance des parents à surestimer l'intelligence mais une distorsion considérable apparait pour les qi de 60 à 80. Des différences significatives ont été trouvées entre le qi mesuré et l'estimation des parents pour (a) les filles mais non les garçons, (b) les enfants en écoles spéciales mais non en écoles normales et (c) les enfants présentant un syndrome de ‘cocktail party’. Aucune différence significative n'a été trouvée entre les classes sociales, en fonction de la gravité du handicap ou pour les enfants uniques. Il est suggéré que la connaissance de l'estimation parentale du qi de leur enfant peut être utilisée dans une situation de conseil et d'orientation. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Ergebnisse des Wechsler Tests an 57 von 58 überlebenden Kindern mit Spina bifida aus einem Heim wurden mit den elterlichen Beurteilungen des geistigen Alters ausgedrückt in iq-Werten verglichen. In der Gesamtpopulation fand sich eine leichte aber nicht signifikante Tendenz der Eltern, die Intelligenz ihrer Kinder überzubewerten, eine erhebliche Diskrepanz fand sich jedoch im iq-Spektrum zwischen 60 und 80. Signifikante Unterschiede zwischen aktuellem iq und von den Eltern bestimmtem iq zeigten sich a) für Mädchen aber nicht für Jungen, b) für Kinder in Sonderschulen aber nicht für Kinder in Normalschulen und c) für Kinder mit dem ‘Cocktail-Party-Syndrom’. Es wurden keine Unterschiede in verschiedenen sozialen Schichten, in dem Schweregrad der Behinderung und bei Einzelkindern gefunden.
