- W2037874657 abstract "Following damage to the lateral hypothalamic region, rats show impairments in orienting their heads toward visual, tactile, and olfactory stimuli, as well as deficits in using their limbs in climbing. When such damage is bilateral, rats also show aphagia, adipsia, akinesia, and catalepsy. Damage to the superior colliculus, in contrast, produces a selective and enduring impairment in head orientation to stimuli. Rats with bilateral collicular lesions show little difficulty in climbing, visually elicited placing, motility, feeding, or drinking. These results support the view that the lateral hypothalamic lesions produce a wide-ranging syndrome of sensorimotor dysfunction, primarily by interrupting basal ganglia fibers. The more restricted impairments in head orientation seen after superior collicular damage are consistent with the limited distribution of tectospinal projections." @default.
