K-Ar ages for two of the samples on the isochron average about 56 ± 1 m.y. Oxygen isotope data show that the granophyre is strongly depleted in18O with an average δ18O of about −2.3‰ (SMOW) as a result of massive interaction with meteoric groundwater at approximate temperatures in the range 300–450°C. It is suggested that the Rb-Sr isochron reflects the point in time when the circulation of meteoric water ceased and that the KAr ages reflect continued radiogenic40Ar loss at lower temperatures after this. The initial87Sr/86Sr ratio for the Glen Cannel granophyre (0.7094 ± 0.0003) is significantly higher than that found for a very fresh dolerite plug in northern Mull (0.7030 ± 0.0001). The high initial ratio and peralkaline chemistry of the granophyre are interpreted as effects of the rock/groundwater interaction in central Mull and do not exclude the possibility that the original acid magma was derived via fractional crystallization of a tholeiitic basalt liquid. The igneous activity in Mull appears to have been of quite short duration, probably not more than about 10 m.y. It was essentially confined to the Paleocene and ended in the Lower Eocene." @default.
