- W2038138936 abstract "Abstract A method is described that selects recurrent groups of taxa from spore-pollen sequences using only presence-absence data. In 53 post-Glacial miospore assemblages, from one locality, significantly associated species pairs (defined by Chi-Square tests) are formed into recurrent groups by an objective selection procedure. The ecologic significance of these recurrent groups is discussed in relation to the synecology of the parent plants and the spore-pollen data from more than 200 Quaternary samples from other areas of New Zealand. The recurrent groups constitute associational units which are ecologically significant and are aggregated by mutual links into two major “systems” which are ecologically distinct and reflect cold and warm climates respectively. The integrity of these systems is indicated by the strong positive bonds between taxa within each system, and by several negative bonds between the systems. Trial application of the concept of recurring groups and systems to interpretation of other Quaternary spore-pollen assemblages suggests that this method is useful and may lead to a more critical paleoecologic evaluation of palynologic data. The climatic indicator value of other miospores, whether or not their botanical affinities are known, may be suggested by linkages with recurrent groups whose significance is established." @default.
