• W2038259525 abstract "Abstract Although nearly all the phase transformations investigated in metals take place by nucleation and growth or nucleation and shear, the limited number of silicates studied so far show a pronounced tendency to transform (or exsolve) by spinodal decomposition, particularly for fast cooling rates. This difference in behaviour appears to result from the crystal structures of the matrix and the product phases in metals being sufficiently different to require some form of nucleation in order to accomplish the necessary atomic rearrangements. In silicate minerals, on the other hand, the crystal structures of the two phases are normally sufficiently similar that the transformation can occur by the spinodal mechanism. The exceedingly slow cooling rates at high temperatures experienced by many geologically important igneous minerals, result in a low density of favourable nucleation sites (grain boundaries and intragranular dislocation structures). In the plagioclase feldspars, where long-range silicon diffusion is required, exsolution by nucleation and growth appears to be kinetically non-competitive even for very slow cooling.
