- W2038301084 abstract "Abstract The effect of infection with pseudorabies virus on the synthesis and turnover of rapidly labeled rabbit kidney cell RNA was investigated. Infection decreases the rate of synthesis of RNA that anneals to cellular DNA (C-RNA); however, this RNA does not turn over as it does in uninfected cells but accumulates in the infected cells. At least part of this RNA is synthesized as larger molecules which are then degraded to molecules of 4–8 S, and a large proportion is found in the cytoplasmic fraction after fractionation of the cells. The cytoplasmic C-RNA contains regions of polyadenylic acid; however, little of this RNA is functional cell-specific mRNA. Competition hybridization experiments show that the population of C-RNA molecules, which is synthesized by and accumulates in the infected cells, differs from that in uninfected cells. These experiments indicate that either: (1) RNA not normally transcribed in uninfected cells is transcribed in the infected cells, or that (2) the mechanisms regulating the processing of cellular RNA are impaired in the infected cells, and that RNA that normally turns over in uninfected cells is adenylated and may be transferred to the cytoplasm of infected cells. It has been found that cytoplasmic virus-specific RNA also contains regions of polyadenylic acid." @default.
