- W2038513585 abstract "An isolate of C. tropicalis obtained from a fatal case of systemic candidiasis was pathogenic on intraperitoneal injection to mice of strains A, CBA and RCL. At an inoculum potential of 106 blastospores, characteristic sites of renal colonisation showed the fungus to assume a predominantly intraluminal distribution and a blastosporic morphology. A four-fold increase in inoculum produced a similar result, but caused the appearance of invasive, interstitial pseudomycelium in the renal cortices of under 3% of inoculated animals. Increased incidence in regional, intra-abdominal loci of infection followed treatment of animals inoculated with 106 blastospores with oxytetracycline (i.p.), or placed in states of metabolic acidosis or alkalosis. Numbers of systemic infections decreased with oxytetracycline but increased during alkalosis. A marked increase in both regional and systemic infection followed the administration of oxytetracycline (i.p.) and hydrocortisone (s.c.) to mice receiving 4 × 106 blastospores. Early mortality was correlated with enhanced pseudomycelial development in the interstitial tissues of the renal cortices of treated animals. A similar type of pseudomycelial colonisation was seen to have developed in the kidney cortices of the patient, who had received combined therapy with steroids and antibiotics. Une souche de C. tropicalis isolée d'un cas mortel de candidose viscérale se révèle pathogène par injection intrapéritonéale à la souris (lignées A, CBA et RCL). Pour un inoculum contenant 1 × 106 blastospores, l'observation de foyers carâctéristiques de colonisation dans le rein, montre que le champignon prédomine dans la lumière des tubes du rein et prend la forme blastospores. Un inoculum quatre fois plus concentré produit un résultat similaire mais provoque l'apparition d'un pseudomycélium interstitiel envahissant la corticalité des reins de moins de 3% des animaux inoculés. Lorsque les animaux inoculés avec 1 × 106 blastospores sont traités avec de l'oxytétracycline (IP) ou amenés à un état d'acidose ou d'alcalose, on observe une augmentation du nombre des foyers d'infection régionale, intra-abdominale. Avec l'oxytétracycline, le nombre des foyers d'infection viscérale diminue alors qu'il augmente avec l'alcalose. Un net accroissement de l'infection régionale et viscérale s'observe à la suite de l'administration d'oxytétracycline (IP) et d'hydrocortisone (SC) à des souris inoculées avec 4 × 106 blastospores. Une mortalité précoce est liée au développement accru de pseudomycélium dans les tissues interstitiels de la corticalité des reins des animaux traités.
