- W2038556427 abstract "1.Recognize the benefit of using easily accessed bedside teaching tools for learners when teaching about the last hours of life.2.Gain knowledge on caring for patients and their families during the last hours of life. Dying is a natural process, yet healthcare providers are often uncomfortable caring for dying patients. Learners have limited exposure to formal curricula on caring for dying patients and often navigate these encounters without the appropriate skills and confidence. We developed and implemented the Double Parallel Curriculum in Palliative Care (DP-PC): End-of-Life (EOL) Module. Double-parallel education refers to the development of an intervention addressing the needs of two learner populations using one group of learners as teachers. DP-PC focuses on caring for patients at the EOL and aims to enhance learner confidence in bedside teaching. 1) To discuss innovative bedside teaching tools that improve learners' knowledge, attitudes, and comfort when caring for patients/families at the end-of-life. 2) To review a dual level of end-of-life education with a simplified and culturally-sensitive bedside teaching tool. 3. To evaluate learners teaching skills by using innovative educational strategies and technology. The curriculum was completed during third-year medical students' ambulatory rotations and included: pre- and post-tests, an online case-based module focused on EOL patient/family care, faculty demonstration/role-play using bedside teaching tool (accessible using iPad/smartphones), and learner role-play using beside a teaching tool. Pre- and post-tests were compared using Pearson Chi Square or Fishers Exact test and improvement was measured by weighted Kappa coefficient. Pre-test and post-test included an adapted general self-efficacy-scale: 10 questions +4 knowledge questions. Pre-Test=247, Post-Test=222. Matched Pre/Post-Test=222; Female=49.1%. Caucasian=60.1%, Asian American=18.5%, Hispanic=16.7%, and African American=3.6%. The students' confidence in their ability to teach other learners and families about EOL care improved significantly after completing the curriculum on all 10 questions (P<0.0001). Four of five knowledge questions showed statistically significant improvement in students' knowledge on taking care of patients in their last hours of life. One question was not statistically significant with result suggestive of guessing. DP-PC is a technologically savvy educational intervention using iPads/smartphones that improves knowledge and the learner's confidence in teaching EOL care." @default.
