- W2038827012 abstract "Abstract In order to find if the brain ventricles offer a viable environment for foreign cells, we have injected myocardial cells into the lateral ventricles and studied the cells by light microscopy SEM at different time periods after injection. Myocardial cells are morphologically distinctive and can be shown to be viable because they contract spontaneously. In other experiments, renin secreting kidney cells were dispersed and injected into the brain ventricles. Water intake was recorded as an index of renin secretion. We found contracting cardiac muscle cells on the ependymal wall and the same distinctively shaped cells on the walls of the lateral and third ventricle 2 or 6 weeks after transplantation. Many cells appeared to have survived the transplantation intact with smooth cell surfaces. Rats injected with kidney cells showed increased water intake. These results demonstrate the feasibility of culturing non-neuronal and neuronal hormone secreting cells in the brain ventricles for neuroendocrine studies." @default.
