- W2038854428 abstract "This study examined preschool and first-grade children's recall and recognition memory for two types of atypical actions: irrelevancies which do not affect the goal of an event and disruptions which disrupt the accomplishment of an event goal. Children listened to stories about familiar events containing script actions, irrelevancies, and disruptions and either recalled the stories or were given a yes/no recognition task in immediate and delayed (1 day later) memory tasks. (Disruptions and irrelevancies were matched for typicality as determined by frequency ratings by same-age children.) Disruptions were recalled better than irrelevancies and this effect was more pronounced in delayed recall. However, both types of atypical actions were recognized well. Script actions were least well recalled, and were confused with other typical actions not included in the stories. These findings indicate that relevance to a goal is a more important factor than typicality in determining recall for events while typicality is more important in discrimination memory." @default.
