- W2038962834 abstract "Psychodynamic psychotherapy aims at understanding current events and interpersonal relationships in relation to the past. The focus is on personal meaning. Psychological understanding (insight) is considered to be the clue to change and growth. Biological psychiatry, in contrast, aims at explaining symptoms and behaviour from knowledge about neurobiological processes. The focus is more on symptoms and behavioural disturbances. The clue to treatment effects is correcting functional or structural neurobiological disturbances. Modern psychological therapies like cognitive-behavioural therapy emphasize symptoms and behaviour more than meaning. These therapies may therefore be considered to be psychological analogues to biologic psychiatric thinking. By replacing psychodynamic theory with symptom-oriented techniques (e.g. cognitive-behavioural therapy), we may in the long run dehumanize clinical psychiatry. A living and healthy psychodynamic psychiatry is needed to counteract the potential risk of developing a mindless biological psychiatry. Nevertheless, psychodynamic therapy also has its risks, particularly of being turned into a static belief system. In the future, psychodynamic and biological approaches should be more integrated. This is exemplified with reference to recent research on the relationship between event related potentials, psychological defence, unconscious processes and psychodynamic understanding.Biological psychiatry, Event-related Potentials, Psychotherapy, Psychophysiology." @default.
