- W2038963514 abstract "Conventional H/Q ratio obtained with isokinetic dynamometry is calculated as hamstring contraction strength (moment of force) divided by quadriceps contraction strength for a given angular velocity and contraction mode(isometric, concentric, eccentric). However, the potential agonist-antagonist strength relationship for actual knee extension and flexion may better be described by a `functional' ratio of eccentric hamstring to concentric quadriceps (H/Q for extension) or concentric hamstring to eccentric quadriceps(H/Q for flexion) strength (Aagaard et al. 1995). The present study examined `functional' and conventional isokinetic H/Q ratio in 9 international top level jumpers (5 males, 4 females). Gravity corrected angle-specific moment of force (at 50°,40°,30° knee flexion) was determined in maximal concentric and eccentric isokinetic knee extension and flexion (10-90° ROM) performed at 30 and 240°·s-1. Across speeds conventional H/Q ratios (±SE) ranged from 48±3 to 54%±2 (50°), 59±3 to 65±2 (40°) and 62±3 to 78±6% (30°). `Functional' H/Q ratio for knee extension at 30°·s-1 was 62±4 (50°), 78±4 (40°), 96±5% (30°) and for extension at 240°·s-1 95±5 (50°), 110±6 (40°), 136±8% (30°), both increasing with decrease in knee angle (p<0.001). `Functional' H/Q ratio for knee flexion at 30°mcs-1 was 39±3 (50°), 48±4 (40°), 61±5% (40°) and at 240°·s-1 27±1 (50°), 35±2 (40°), 34±2% (30°). In conclusion, `functional' H/Q ratio for knee extension a fast velocity yielded a 1:1 relationship, which increased even further at extended knee joint position. Thus the `functional' H/Q ratio indicates a significant capacity of the hamstring muscles to provide dynamic joint stability in terminal knee extension. It is recommended that a evaluation of dynamic knee joint function should combine the data on`functional' and conventional H/Q ratio and absolute strength levels." @default.
