- W2039156726 abstract "The effects of dilution leading to loss of buoyancy and sinking of Dunaliella were studied.Dilution causes an immediate cell swelling which changes cell shape from elongated to more spherical, and is connected with a cessation of flagellar movement. During the next phase, not all cells fully recover their former state. With increasing stress of dilution, the irreversibly-damaged fraction of the population grows, loses buoyancy and sinks to the bottom. These settled cells reproduce slowly, or remain dormant for a prolonged period of time, but recover motility upon transfer to optimal salinity. This sinking mechanism may well serve as a survival strategy in the natural hypersaline environment, by allowing Dunaliella to escape from the upper water layer during rain, where dilution may endanger cell integrity.Periodic dilution has recently been used as a means of controlling blooms of Dunaliella panva Lerche in experimental solar ponds which collect radiant energy for production of electricity in the Dead Sea area. Those cells that sink as a result of induced stress of dilution are destroyed in the hot brine accumulating in the depths of these ponds." @default.
