- W2039223732 abstract "Naive listeners, when instructed to listen for a sentence, are capable of transcribing the phonetic message of acoustic signals consisting solely of time-varying sinusoids. These unnatural-sounding signals mimic the pattern of formant center-frequency and amplitude variation over the course of polysyllabic, semantically normal utterances. To what exent does amplitude variation over time contribute to intelligibility? Our present investigation tested the hypothesis that listeners derive some information about syllable patterns from amplitude variation alone, and may therefore use semantic and other contextual constraints to deduce prosodically appropriate portions of the message in the tonal stimulus. We compared phonetic and syllabic intelligibility in four conditions of sinusoidal patterning: (1) normal amplitude and frequency variation, (2) normal frequency variation with constant amplitude, (3) frequency variation with a misleading amplitude contour, and (4) normal amplitude variation with no frequency variation. These results are discussed in the framework of phonetic perception and in terms of current theories of the perception of fluent speech. [Supported by Sigma Xi, NICHD and NIH.]" @default.
