- W2039292122 abstract "Fetal and early postnatal life is associated with a physiological immune deficiency. This deficiency is reflected by the untoward outcomes of various infections that occur during this period of life. Some of the infections are caused by normally pathogenic organisms, whereas others are regarded as opportunists. The increased incidence and severity of infections likely is caused by relative deficits in multiple components of innate and antigen-specific immunity compared with adults. Throughout this period, a progressive, but asynchronous, maturation of the immune response occurs, such that certain microorganisms produce severe disease in the fetus, but mild or no disease if acquired near term (eg, cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma). Other microorganisms are unduly pathogenic in the neonatal period but not thereafter (eg, herpes simplex virus), and yet others remain so in infants up to 1 to 2 years of life (eg, Mycobacterium tuberculosis). This review addresses the ontogeny of the immune response and how it may relate to the changing susceptibility to infection with age." @default.
