- W2039294448 abstract "196 The purpose of this study was to determine if treadmill exercise training hinders skeletal muscle recovery from injury resulting from eccentric contractions. A nerve cuff was chronically implanted on the left common peroneal nerve in twenty female ICR mice 30 d prior to the injury protocol. Isometric torque of the left anterior crural muscles was measured in vivo at stimulation frequencies between 20 and 400 Hz before, immediately after, and 5, 14, 21 and 28 d after a 150 eccentric contraction protocol. Beginning the day after the injury, the trained group (n=11) ran daily on a treadmill at 20 m/min for 30 min a day; this kind of training is known to recruit the anterior crural muscles, especially the tibialis anterior muscle. The control group (n=9) was allowed normal cage activity. The isometric torque was reduced between 53% (400 Hz) and 86% (20 Hz) immediately after the eccentric contraction bout. There was no difference in the recovery of isometric torque between the groups. For both groups, the isometric torque for the lower stimulation frequencies (20-100 Hz) recovered by 14 d, whereas the torque for the higher stimulation frequencies (125-400) recovered by 21 d. These data indicate that run training neither exacerbates skeletal muscle strength deficits nor retards the recovery of strength following initiation of eccentric contraction-induced muscle injury.
