- W2039392876 abstract "AbstractThe report of the Precision Machined Optics Ad Hoc Committee to the ManufacturingTechnology Advisory Group is presented. The committee identifies a technology implemen-tation barrier and recommends several DoD funded programs to help solve the problem.IntroductionThe purpose of the DoD Manufacturing Technology Advisory Group Ad Hoc Committee onPrecision Machining of Optics is to coordinate tri- service MT efforts, to recommend jointefforts between DoD, other government elements, and industry, and to develop a five -yearplan identifying areas requiring R D Bill Friday, MIRADCOM, Redstone Arsenal,AL; Don Decker, NAVWPNCEN, China Lake, CA; and the author. Members collected data on pro-grams in their respective services that could be affected by machined optics. About 30companies that have expressed interest in machined optics were contacted to determine theircorporate position on developing an in -house capability for machined optics. Included inthe survey were the three main suppliers of machines used for machined optics; Pneumo Pre-cision, Moore Special Tool, and Ex- Cell -0 Corp.Present Sources of Machined OpticsThe committee recognized that most of the production capability for single point dia-mond turned (SPDT) optics in the U.S. resides within the ERDA establishment for use ontheir programs. While ERDA's Oak Ridge or Livermore facilities have made prototype compo-nents for various DoD programs, they will not perform the job shop role that the committeefeels is needed for the many small and large procurements of SPDT optics that were identi-" @default.
