- W203952303 abstract "Complex adsorption phenomena between microorganisms and soil particles, in addition to local differences in the concentrations of hydrogen ions and nutrients at the surfaces of soil colloids lead to different microsites with respect to aeration. Studies have shown that the centers of soil aggregates can be oxygen-depleted even when the surface is exposed to atmospheric oxygen concentrations. These differences cause many apparently conflicting processes, such as nitrification and denitrification, to occur simultaneously. Roots also greatly increase the heterogeneity and the dynamics of the soil ecosystem. Due to local differences in the nutrient supply by roots to the rhizosphere, the composition of the microflora will also vary from place to place. Reports on the degradation of pesticides in anaerobic micro-habitats of a generally aerobic environment are limited. For many pesticides it was demonstrated, however, that they are more rapidly degraded in flooded than in upland soils. It is also reported that variable anaerobic and aerobic conditions sometimes favor their degradation. Isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane are not only readily degraded by strict anaerobes but also by facultative aerobic bacteria. These bacteria propagate well under aerobic conditions but dechlorinate HCH-isomers only under anaerobic conditions in the presence of glucose or other readily available carbon sources. Nitro groups in aromatic moieties of many pesticides are more readily reduced by anaerobic than by aerobic conditions but the following ring cleavage occurs only aerobically. Further examples will be discussed." @default.
