- W2039584037 abstract "ABSTRACT Premature and unexpected downhole failures are costly and introduce inefficiency in drilling and production operations. The integrity of tubulars used in these operations can be enhanced by reducing the risk of crack initiation through minimising the intensity of stresses ahead of existing defects, together with using materials of high fracture toughness properties. Many material specifications now include minima for the V-notch Charpy absorption at one or more temperatures. However, Charpy values are inadequate in defining accurately the fracture toughness properties, determining the critical defect size and establishing.the conditions under which such a defect would become unstable. Therefore, the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) approach of general yielding fracture mechanics has been used to assess the toughness requirement of a range of downhole tubulars at ambient and various sub-zero temperatures. The materials studied included drillpipe and casing which fall within the category of API Specs 5D and 5CT and bottom hole assembly components covered by API 7A. This assessment was supported by carrying out fitness for purpose evaluations in accordance with British Standard PD 6493. Minimum safe values for the fracture toughness (CTOD values), relating to the body and threaded sections of tubulars with respect to the presence of possible defects, have been calculated. In addition, the Charpy V-notch properties of the steels have been correlated with those of critical CTOD values. These relationships will enable materials and drilling engineers to specify adequate fracture toughness properties using relatively inexpensive and simple Charpy impact tests. The results have clearly identified necessary toughness requirements for a range of typical tubular materials. It is recommended that a similar fracture mechanics approach, specifying the Charpy impact values, be adopted by API in future tubular specifications. This would ensure that a tubular is fit for purpose and thus minimise the occurrence of costly brittle failure of downhole tubulars." @default.
