- W2039626116 abstract "Summary Background and purpose Orthotic devices have been widely used to protect the ankle during rehabilitation after injury. However, their impact on athletic performance has not been examined thoroughly. Therefore the aim of this study was to examine the effect of two different orthotic devices, Swede-O and Aircast, on the performance of a simple balance task. Method The sample consisted of 20 physical education students with a mean age of 21.9 years (standard deviation 1.55). The subjects performed a balance task under three conditions, with the application of the Swede-O stabiliser, with Aircast, and without an orthotic device. The subjects tried to maintain balance, defined as a range of 5° from the horizontal plane, on a stability platform for 30 seconds. The time that the subjects were able to balance, as well as deviations to left and right, were recorded in seconds. Results Analysis of variance revealed no statistically significant differences among the conditions examined, suggesting that the application of the stabilisers did not affect performance of the balance task. Conclusion Both Aircast and Swede-O stabilisers do not affect performance of a balance task. These findings imply that in balance tasks similar to the one used in the present study these stabilisers could be applied without concerns about deterioration of performance." @default.
