- W2039628804 abstract "The survival of the rat salivary and exorbital lacrimal glands in organ culture has been compared at different ages. The effects of hyperbaric oxygen and various additions to the culture medium were also tested. 1. Under standard conditions (Trowell technique), none of the mature salivary glands survived structurally intact for longer than 1–2 days. The exorbital lacrimal gland survived 2–4 days. 2. Hyperbaric oxygen killed cultures of all the glands within 24 h. 3. The sublingual gland survived better than the other salivary glands; its survival was improved by adding hydrocortisone or 6-amino hexanoic acid to the medium. 4. The submandibular gland survived badly except while largely undifferentiated (age 1–2 weeks). At age 4 weeks, when the acini were differentiated, survival was greatly improved by adding hydrocortisone to the medium. At age 3 months, when the convoluted granular tubules were differentiated, hydrocortisone did not regularly improve survival. 5. The parotid gland survived badly except while still largely undifferentiated (age 1–2 weeks). No means of improving the survival of the mature gland was found." @default.
