- W2039642917 abstract "In early electrophysiological studies, so called “glucose-monitoring” (GM) neural cells were discovered in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) and the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus. Since then, such GM neurons have been identified in several other regions of the rodent and macaque brain. In addition to localizing them, we have also shown that these GM cells differentially change in activity in response to microelectrophoretically administered catecholamines and other chemicals, as well as to gustatory and olfactory stimulations. Furthermore, GM neurons of the primate LHA, amygdala, globus pallidus and orbitofrontal cortex also displayed characteristic, hunger level dependent firing rate changes during a bar press feeding task. Recently, we have demonstrated that streptozotocin (STZ) induced specific destruction of the forebrain GM cells resulting in the development of complex metabolic feeding disturbances. It is suggested, therefore, that these chemoneurons are not only important participants of the central regulation of feeding and metabolism, but that integrity of the GM neural network is an indispensable condition for the maintenance of an adaptive, homeostatic balance of the organism." @default.
