• W2040017899 abstract "The oxidation of MnZn-ferrite has been studied by X-ray diffraction and thermomagnetic analysis with special emphasis on the oxidation products and their dependence on particle size. The rate of oxidation of particles compacted from coarse crystallites is lower than that of the small crystallites but the change of oxidation rate with crystallite size becomes less significant with decreasing particle size. Oxidation products depend on the temperature but not on the particle size. They are a single phase spinel or a spinel plus α-Fe2O3, below and above 600°C, respectively. Low temperature oxidation gave a spinel phase having a broad distribution of higher Curie temperatures, indicating non-uniform oxidation within the particles. Annealing of such samples in evacuated capsules at higher temperatures gave rise to α-Fe2O3 precipitation and a spinel phase with a single Curie temperature which is lower than that of the original sintered material. High temperature oxidation comprises two processes, one within the spinel structure and the other accompanied by α-Fe2O3 precipitation. The former may be considered as an incubation period for α-Fe2O3 precipitation, during which a certain number of cation vacancies, needed for α-Fe2O3 precipitation, are created. Surface and grain boundary regions are more extensively oxidized compared to the overall degree of oxidation, the more so in coarse particles, suggesting that the grain boundaries as well as surfaces play an important role in oxidation." @default.
