- W2040228052 abstract "PURPOSE To examine the impact of menstrual cycle phase on maximal muscular strength (1 RM) and ratings of perceived exertion corresponding to active muscle (RPE-AM) during submaximal resistance exercise. METHODS Nine recreationally active female subjects with regular menstrual cycles were assigned to a counterbalanced order of testing based on menstrual cycle phase. Only subjects with positive ovulation tests, using Clear Plan Easy kits, were assigned to a testing group. Subjects were tested during the menses phase (M: days 2 or 3 of menstruation), the follicular phase (F: 3 days prior to predicted ovulation), and the luteal phase (L: 10 days post ovulation). The following dependent variables were evaluated during each phase of the menstrual cycle: 1) 1RM for the bench press and the leg press, 2) RPE-AM, i.e. pectorals during the bench press and quadriceps during the leg press. RPE-AM was recorded immediately following each of two sets of 10 repetitions representing 30% and 60% of baseline 1 RM. Subjects were randomly assigned to a counterbalanced order of sub-maximal intensities and resistance exercises. Blood concentrations of estrogen and progesterone were measured to confirm the menstrual cycle phase of subjects at the time of testing. RESULTS The 1 RM for the bench press (F=34.09±7.54, L=34.72±6.65, M=33.24±6.07 kg) and 1 RM for the leg press (F=139.14±42.83, L=134.85±39.56, M=132.39±38.45 kg) were not significantly different between the three phases of the menstrual cycle. RPE-AM at 30% of 1 RM was not significantly different across the three phases of the menstrual cycle during the bench press (F=10.00±1.658, L=10.22±1.787, M=10.00±1.604) or leg press (F=11.67±1.732, L=11.33±1.118, M=12.13±1.553). RPE-AM at 60% of 1RM was not significantly different across the three phases of the menstrual cycle during the bench press (F=12.89±1.054, L=13.33±1.803, M=13.38±0.518) or leg press (F=14.33±1.323, L=14.67±1.803, M=14.88±1.458). CONCLUSION Menstrual cycle phase does not have a differential effect on maximal strength or perceived exertion during bench press or leg press." @default.
