- W2040243330 abstract "Three polypeptides designated epiactins A, B, and C are responsible for the hemolytic activity of extracts of the sea anemone, Epiactis prolifera. Their pI values are 6.4, 8.3, and 7.6 for A, B, and C, respectively. They all are similar in size (ca. 19,500 daltons) and lack methionine and proline. Epiactin B is the major toxin and it is inactivated by dialysis against distilled water, by freeze-drying, and by exposure to 50 °C for 30 min whereas epiactin A is stable to these treatments. Epiactin C appears to be a variant form of B. The activity of epiactin B is inhibited by sphingomyelin and by sheep erythrocyte membranes. Treatment of the latter with enzymes known to destroy sphingomyelin reduces the inhibitory capacity of the membranes. For these reasons sphingomyelin is thought to be the receptor for the toxin. Epiactin B is broadly similar to basic, sphingomyelin-inhibitable, cytotoxic polypeptides produced by several other anthozoan species but is more powerful in its action on sheep erythrocytes than any yet described." @default.
