- W2040243693 abstract "The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of short period of resistance training on muscle use which was evaluated by exercise-induced contrast shift in MRI and strength. Seven male volunteers(24.1±2.0 years) participated in this study. Subjects were required to train the knee extensor muscles 9 times for 2 weeks. Ten sets of 5 repetitions were performed on a isokinetic dynamometer at 120 deg/sec with one minutes rest between each set. Cross-sectional area (CSA) of knee extensor muscles(KE) were determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Muscle fiber types and fiber area were determined on histological sections from vastus lateralis using needle biopsy technique. Isokinetic torque of KE and iEMG activity of rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis (VM) were measured at 0, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, and 300 deg/sec. Exercise-induced contrast shift in MRI was determined based on T2-weighted images of the thigh at rest and after 100 repetitions isokinetic knee extensions at 120 deg/sec (10 sets of 10 repetitions with 0.5 min rest between each set). Exercise-induced contrast shift in T2-weighted MR images are reflective of muscle use. In the present study, T2 values greater than the resting means ± ISD in MRI pixels were considered to represent muscle that had performed contractile activity. No changes were found CSA of KE and muscle fiber area. Significant increases in knee extension torque at 0-240 deg/sec and iEMG of RF, VL, and VM at all the tested velocities were observed. CSA of muscle involved after knee extensions significantly increased after resistance training. Peak torque per unit of CSA significantly increased 0, 90, 120, and 180 deg/sec. on the other hand, peak torque pre unit of CSA of muscle involved after knee extensions was no changes after training. These results suggest that improved muscle strength after 2 weeks of resistance training was due to increased muscle use." @default.
